Who We Are?
The Shed Happens "Shed Night" is an opportunity for men to get together on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Please note: Shed Night does not occur during January of each year unless advised otherwise.
In 2012 Alan Sherlock, OAM (1938 - 2016), saw a need for men in the Ashgrove / The Gap area to meet and share life stories and talk about 'men's issues'. Alan was a former Queensland MLA representing the Ashgrove / The Gap area and also a Scout Commissioner. His main work life profession was a pharmacist in the Ashgrove / The Gap area.
Since Shed Night began in April 2013, 160 men have attended at least once. The lowest attendance number was 32 due to the State of Origin 2013 and the largest number was 105 in February 2014 when we had the then Premier of Queensland, The Honourable, Campbell Newman MP who told us his life story - in a non-political way. The average attendance is around 20 to 35 men which is a very pleasing number.
What We Offer You
Shed Night offers men of any age and from all walks of life from The Gap, Ashgrove and nearby suburbs, the opportunity to come together once a month, have fun, have a yarn with fellow men and listen to interesting life stories from two other men. It is "Blokes encouraging other blokes as they travel the journey of life together".
Shed Night is a "judgement free zone" where men can come together and share their stories. Dress code either "straight from work "or casual.....interview technique allows a bloke with little speaking experience to share his story.
The evening normally begins at 5:30pm and finishes around 8.00 to 8.30pm. For a donation of $10, you will be greeted by a committee member and provided with a lucky door prize ticket and over a delicious barbeque you can mingle and have a great yarn with other men. Soft drinks are included as well.
At approximately 6.00pm, everyone adjourns to the main seating area of the The Gap Scout Den. Through an informal interview styled discussion by a committee member, two men tell their particular life story. Following each interview, participants are given the opportunity to ask questions from the floor.
During 'intermission', tea, coffee and and biscuits is served, and continue to chat until close at around 8:30pm - 8:45pm.
Shed Happens for Men complies with the COVID-19 Plan mandated by Queensland Scouts. Scout members do all the food preparation and serving as well as dispensing tea, coffee and Tim-Tams at 'Intermission'.
